Fred was a founder Partner of JTP in 1995. His experience ranges from the design of individual buildings to the masterplanning of large-scale sites, working on the concept design of major new settlements for the public and private sectors.

In the UK, Fred has been responsible for masterplans to transform redundant water treatment and MOD facilities into high-quality residential neighbourhoods. These include Kew Riverside, London; The Hamptons, Worcester Park, London and The Manor, near Reading, which won a Building for Life Silver Standard Award. He was also responsible for the London Wetland Centre, Barnes, London, which has won a series of environmental awards.

Fred has used participatory planning techniques to engage with local communities in revitalising urban quarters. This work has been carried out extensively in the UK and also in mainland Europe, France and Germany in particular, where Fred’s foreign language skills have been an asset.

Fred has worked on the masterplanning of over 30 town extensions and new settlements in China and Russia, on sites ranging from 50 to 1,500 ha. He led the team for the international competition-winning masterplan for Suzhou Eco-town in 2011 and played a key role in the international team which won the Moscow Expansion Competition in 2012.

Much of Fred’s work concentrates on sustainable approaches to development, resulting in his involvement with the EU ‘EcoCity’ initiative, bringing together model projects throughout Europe. This has led to over a decade of consultancy for the City of Tampere, Finland, and invitations to present his innovative ideas about Healthy Placemaking at WHO and UN conferences, focussing on how well-planned environments can encourage healthy lifestyles as well as slowing climate change.
