Event overview
Join the Building Performance Network (BPN), a programme of the Good Homes Alliance, for an in-person afternoon symposium event in London. At this intimate event we’ll get into the detail to exchange the latest building performance evaluation (BPE) research and technical developments, and discuss the way forward for BPE in the UK.
Why should you attend?
Studies have shown that the “performance gap” in housing is significant with actual energy use in some cases over four times what has been predicted.
There is an emerging market for building performance technologies and evaluation techniques, and the range of BPE tools available has grown in recent years, driven by increased awareness of the performance gap, the rollout of smart meters and the rise of internet-connected devices in homes.
Interest in BPE is at an all time high. However, there is still a way to go before performance measurement is commonplace.
To enable consistency in the evaluation of the performance of buildings, BPN supported the development of a British Standard for Building Performance Evaluation (BS 40101) which was launched in 2022. BS40101 is due to receive an update in the near future and at the conference we will seek feedback from attendees on how the standard could be improved to further increase uptake of building performance evaluation in the UK.
Join this half-day in-person conference and workshop to find out more on the latest BPE research findings, technological advancements and next steps for the industry.
Programme
13:30 Registration and refreshments
14:00 Welcome to the symposium – Dr. Tom Dollard, Vice-Chair, Good Homes Alliance
Session 1 – BPE research, guidance and standards
14:10 An introduction to HEARTH: The National Hub on Net Zero, Health and Extreme Heat – Professor Rajat Gupta, Director of the Oxford Institute for Sustainable Development (OISD) and Low Carbon Building Research Group, Oxford Brookes University
“Prof. Gupta is leading a new National Research Hub called HEARTH which will explore how the transition to net zero can improve health outcomes, particularly for vulnerable populations, by tackling the risks of extreme heat.”
14:30 Data interpretation and the performance golden thread – Dr. Sam Mudie, Director, Sustain-Ability Homes
“Sam will present her ongoing work for the BPN alongside Kate van Someren which has involved developing two new guidance documents on interpreting & reporting building performance data, and the importance of retaining a ‘golden thread’ throughout the BPE process.”
14:50 British Standard for Building Performance Evaluation: Feedback and discussion on BS40101 – Dr Kerry J Mashford OBE, Interfacing and Dr. Tom Dollard, Vice-Chair, Good Homes Alliance

15:10 Refreshment break and networking
Session 2 – BPE and retrofit
15:40 How is BPE being used in retrofit and why isn’t it being used more? – Mark Collett, Building Performance Researcher/Postdoctoral Researcher at the Leeds Sustainability Institute, Leeds Beckett University
“Mark will share the findings from a research project which has explored which BPE tools are being used in retrofit, for what purposes, and the barriers that may be preventing their wider adoption. To gain insight into current practices, interviews were conducted with key stakeholders across the retrofit sector—including social landlords, retrofit coordinators, and installers to understand their experiences and perspectives on the use of BPE in retrofit.”
16:00 Workshop – How can we do more BPE in retrofit? – Mark Collett and Professor David Glew, Director of Leeds Sustainability Institute, Leeds Beckett University
16:40 Wrap-up and next steps
17:00 Close followed by informal drinks and networking at local pub
Who should attend?
Anyone with an interest in closing the performance gap and improving the real-world performance of homes and buildings from an energy, carbon and health perspective. Including BPE practitioners, housing developers, technology specialists, social housing providers, consultants, architects and designers, engineers and more.
Where is the event taking place?
The event will take place at GHA member Pollard Thomas Edwards‘ offices at Diespeker Wharf, beside the Regent’s Canal in London. Diespeker Wharf was acquired by PTE in 1994 who have refurbished the listed former Victorian terrazzo factory for its own headquarters, with 20,000 sq.ft. of contempoary office space and residential accommodation. The building was shortlisted for an AJ Retrofit Award in 2023.
